View Full Version : No Love for SPACE

I've been keeping one eye open on Tom's Top Ten list is another part of this forum. As a west coaster and a Disneyland veteran, I'm looking forward to my first visit to WDW later this year. But as I keep an eye on the Top Ten's that come through, I'm amazed how little regard there is for Mission SPACE. Am I missing something? I watch the WDW specials on the Travel Channel that often feature the Mission SPACE attraction but still for the people who frequent the World, its prominence isn't all that great. Mission SPACE would have been on my top 5 attractions to hit during my visit but surprisingly, it makes it on very few Top 10s and even then, nowhere near the top. Strange.

It's a great attraction, but you don't hear much about it. I haven't ridden full throttle, but it's no doubt something you can only experience at Epcot.
Now, these travel shows do tend to...exaggerate on some attractions. It's what they do. It gets the crowds in.
I enjoy the green team less intense, even if it is just a simulator. But it's something special all the same. But that's what all attractions are.
I would also like to mention the unsung hero of the attraction, the post show. Not only is it a great queue, but an awesome exit, including a play-place, a (relevantly outdated, so by default poor) video game, a giant interactive game, and an exit hallway painted like a Star Tours StarSpeeder 3000.
The attraction isn't unloved, it's just lost some of its fans, who have converted into Soarin' fans. (not to mention the people like me who want Horizons back)
Mission:SPACE. It's at Epcot. Go ride it.
(and to regulars like me who ride it all the time, I found out something to do when you've ridden it too many times. Randomly press buttons and flip switches, they do nothing, but they have some pretty cool [pretend]functions and they make noises)

Mission:SPACE is fun (well at least Orange is, I'm assuming Green is pretty lame) but it's not one of those rides that I always have to do. I will only do it once in awhile, simply because there are better rides at Epcot. Mission:SPACE requires you to invest a lot of time, and the pay off just isn't there like it is in other Epcot rides, like Test Track or Soarin'.
It's definitely an amazing experience unlike anything you'll ever do anywhere else in the world, it's just not quite worthy of my Top 10 list. Some people may argue with the Horizons replacement theory, but I loved World of Motion too, and don't hate Test Track.

M:S is a great ride in it's own right. It is immersive, has great effects, and is a perfect fit for EPCOT in the 21st century.
Could it have been a full fledged PAVILION and not just a ride, like it was planned to be in the 1970's? (Between TLS and TL) Yes. Could it have been a smaller version of that, in the Horizons building in 1994? Yes.
Did we get the bare minimum for a Space Pavilion? Yes.
But it's still great.
LOL.
The only real problem....It's sitting on what should be Horizon's land!

Or at the very least the original plans for Mission Space before the budget cuts.

Yes! But I still like Space all the same.

I really dig Mission SPACE. It's a great concept and when you ride the true (orange) version it provides a truly unique experience. The queue is great to look at, I'll admit the queue videos were a little cringe-worthy and the song played as you exit is among my least favorite at WDW, but how cool is it that WDI's attention to detail even went so far as to include SFX when you pressed random buttons on the "control console." I still geek out at that.
the only thing I would have changed would be if they placed it where WoL is now....right next to Horizons 2.0

Could not agree more. I also love some of those old Mission to Mars references in the queue.

Mission Space is and experience that has to be done. I have been to a lot of theme parks and ridden a lot of "thrill rides", but nothing comes close to MS. It is different than anything I have ever experienced. Intense to the fullest degree. I remember they were touting it as the closest thing to actual space travel that any person can have besides actual space training. It is a truly unique experience for any theme park. And when you get off you get that head buzz for like ten minutes, and I love that!
